Monday at Arrowmont

We got up early this morning at 6:30am to go for a 30 minute training run. Boy, we thought running the bridges in Jacksonville was 'Hill work'.. Ha! They have REAL hills here!! We did a little over 2 miles and the hills were challenging, but the great thing was that it was only 65 degrees here this morning. It was almost like winter time. It was great. We had a real nice jog past some mountain brooks and thru some lovely scenery.
We came back to start the day with breakfast and a full day of art immersion. Emory and I both had a pretty productive day.
After dinner we went to the nightly 'slide show' presentation, where a few of the instructors and resident artists gave presentations about their art work.
Right now Emory is back in the woodturning shop and I am going to do a little sketching to generate more ideas for my work this week. We are both having a really good time and enjoying the time off, although we are both 'working' pretty hard! :)

Sunday Arrival at Arrowmont

We spent Saturday night in Greenville, SC and the hotel was just across the street from a mall very much like our St. Johns Town Center. We had dinner at a sports bar called Indigo Joes and then went across the street to the Barnes and Noble to hang out for a while. We then took about a 30 minute walk just to get moving again after being in the car for so long. This morning we took our time getting moving as it was raining pretty steady and looked like it would be all day. So we decided a nature hike was probably not a good idea. We got on the road around 10:30 am and had a really nice drive thru the mountains. The weather did actually clear up enough so we had some really nice views of the Smokey Mountains.
We got into Arrowmont around 2:30 and got all checked in. We hadn't eaten lunch so we walked down the hill into Gatlinburg. Man, are there alot of people down there!!! We did the tourist-y window shopping thing for a while and grabbed a bite to eat, then came back to the peace and quiet of the Arrowmont campus.
We are staying in one of the dormortories, and it is very much like my dorm in college - two double beds and a shared bathroom. But it is comfortable enough and it is part of the Arrowmont experience to stay right on campus.
The evening started off with dinner in the dining hall at 5:30, followed by Orientation at 6:30pm. At 7:30pm we all went to our class rooms to begin our classes. I wasnt expecting to do much the first night but we made a print from start to finish in 2.5 hours. Emory's woodturning class was spent with getting all their equipment set up. We were pretty tired after a full day so went down around 11pm to get ready for a busy day tomorrow!

A great start

Emory and I are heading off to a week long vacation - just the two of us. We are going to spend the week at the Arrowmont School of the Arts in Gatlinburg, TN. Emory will be taking a Woodturning class and I am taking a print making class. We started out the morning with the first day of our marathon training for the 26.2 with Donna, which will be in February. This morning we did 3 miles.
Then we came home and got our stuff loaded up in the car and got on the road. The trip was going pretty well until we got about 20 miles outside of Spartanburg SC and there must have been a massive wreck because we were stuck in parking-lot-like trraffic for 2 hours - just to go about 10 miles. As expected, when the traffic finally cleared there was no indication of what the hold up was.. We were just happy to get moving again. We are spending the night in Greenville, SC and are going to try to find a short hiking excursion to do tomorrow before we get into Gatlinburg.
